Progression guide
Can I Use a Diploma to Progress to a Degree in Ghana?
A diploma can provide a progression route, but it does not automatically convert into a degree or guarantee advanced entry. The receiving institution decides how it is treated.

The Short Answer
Yes, in some cases. The current pathway evidence records diploma routes at Accra Technical University and Cape Coast Technical University, including related progression possibilities where the receiving provider permits them. Progression depends on the diploma field, result, transcript, programme match, active policy and any application process.
How diploma progression works
The pathway evidence describes a two-year diploma route and says a related diploma may later be considered for a degree or BTech route where the receiving institution permits it. That wording matters because progression is an institutional decision.
A provider may assess the qualification level, subject content, transcript and relationship between the diploma and the intended programme.
- Choose a diploma aligned with the degree or BTech field you want later.
- Ask the future provider whether it accepts the specific diploma title.
- Ask whether progression is direct entry, credit transfer or a new application.
The current evidence is programme specific
ATU's evidence lists diploma areas including business, IT, marketing, accounting, procurement, design and architectural technology, while CCTU describes diplomas across business, engineering, hospitality, computing, statistics and design.
These examples show possible routes, not a national progression rule. A diploma in one field should not be assumed to qualify for an unrelated degree.
- Confirm the active diploma intake and programme-specific entry subjects.
- Compare the diploma curriculum with the intended degree curriculum.
- Ask for the receiving provider's written advanced-entry or progression conditions.
Plan for the application step
Keep your full academic record and contact both institutions early. The receiving provider may require a fresh application, an application fee, an interview or additional documents.
Even when a source mentions progression, eligibility is not admission. Only the receiving institution can decide the entry level and any credits awarded.
- Request a transcript that identifies courses, grades and completion status.
- Confirm the current application route and deadline with the receiving institution.
- Do not rely on an informal promise about automatic transfer.
Plan your diploma progression
Compare related diploma options and contact the intended receiving institution before assuming advanced entry or credit transfer.
Diploma and progression examples are based on the Find My Uni GH dataset snapshot reviewed 2026-09-12 and provider pathway evidence. The receiving institution decides equivalence and entry level. Eligibility screening does not establish admission, programme accreditation, professional licensure, clinical placement or active-intake availability.
