Overview
HND Marine Engineering Technology prepares you to operate, maintain and repair engines, machinery and electrical systems on ships and marine facilities. It is worth pursuing in Ghana because the ports, fishing industry, offshore oil and gas activities and maritime transport require technically skilled personnel with internationally relevant knowledge.
What you will study
You study marine diesel engines, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, ship construction, marine electrical systems, refrigeration, hydraulics, pollution control and engine-room operations. Practical training develops skills in machinery maintenance, fault diagnosis, safety procedures, watchkeeping, technical documentation and emergency response.
Career prospects
You can work as a marine engineering technician, engine-room rating, ship maintenance technician, marine electrical technician or port equipment technician. Opportunities exist with Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority contractors, shipping companies, fishing fleets, ship-repair yards, offshore oil and gas service firms, harbour operators and international maritime employers.
