Overview
BSc Petrochemical Engineering teaches you how to convert petroleum and natural gas into useful chemicals, fuels, plastics and industrial products. It is relevant to Ghana’s petroleum and manufacturing ambitions because processing hydrocarbons locally can create value, support industry and reduce reliance on imported products.
What you will study
You study organic and physical chemistry, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, reaction engineering, process control, refinery operations, polymer technology and petrochemical process design. You also learn about plant equipment, separation processes, health and safety, environmental protection, process simulation and industrial economics.
Career prospects
You can work as a petrochemical process engineer, refinery engineer, production engineer, process control engineer, quality assurance engineer or plant operations engineer. Employers and sectors include petroleum refineries, chemical and plastics manufacturers, Ghana National Gas Company, oil and gas service firms, industrial plants and international energy companies.
Who this programme may suit
You will do well if you enjoy chemistry, mathematics, industrial systems and finding efficient ways to transform raw materials. Analytical ability, careful attention to safety, teamwork and comfort with plant-based work are important.
