Overview

BSc Earth Sciences explores the planet’s materials, processes and history, including the rocks, minerals, groundwater and hazards that influence human life. The programme is especially relevant in Ghana, where mining, groundwater supply, construction, energy and environmental management depend on earth-science expertise.

What you will study

You study geology, mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, geomorphology, hydrology, geophysics and earth history. Field mapping, laboratory analysis, geographic information systems, remote sensing, data interpretation and geological reporting help you develop practical skills.

Career prospects

You can work as a geologist, exploration geologist, hydrogeologist, geophysicist, environmental officer, geological technician or mining consultant. Opportunities exist with mining companies, the Ghana Geological Survey Authority, water and construction firms, environmental consultancies, petroleum and renewable-energy sectors, universities and international resource companies.

Who this programme may suit

You thrive if you enjoy outdoor investigation, maps, landscapes and understanding how the Earth works. Physical stamina, numerical ability, observation and a willingness to combine fieldwork with laboratory and computer analysis are useful.
