Overview

BEd Social Studies Education prepares you to teach history, geography, government, economics, citizenship and related social sciences at the basic or secondary level. It matters in Ghana because strong Social Studies teachers help learners understand national development, democracy, culture and responsible citizenship, making this a meaningful route into education and community leadership.

What you will study

You study Ghanaian and world history, physical and human geography, government, economics, sociology, social research and Ghanaian culture. The programme also develops lesson planning, curriculum interpretation, classroom management, assessment, educational technology and supervised teaching practice.

Career prospects

You can work as a Social Studies teacher in public or private schools, including schools managed by the Ghana Education Service, private school groups and international schools. With experience or further study, you may become a headteacher, curriculum officer, education administrator, teacher educator, researcher or staff member of an NGO focused on civic education and development.

Who this programme may suit

You thrive if you enjoy society, current affairs, reading, discussion and explaining complex issues clearly. Patience, fairness, strong communication and a genuine interest in helping young people learn will support your success.
