Overview

BSc Optometry prepares you to examine eyes, detect vision problems and support the prevention and management of eye disease. It is important in Ghana because avoidable visual impairment affects education, work and quality of life, while optometrists provide accessible primary eye care and help reduce pressure on specialist services.

What you will study

You study ocular anatomy and physiology, optics, refraction, binocular vision, contact lenses, pathology, pharmacology and public health. Clinical practice develops your skills in eye examinations, diagnosis, prescribing corrective lenses, detecting systemic conditions and referring patients for medical or surgical care.

Career prospects

You can work as an optometrist in eye clinics, hospitals, optical practices, community eye programmes, universities and private vision-care businesses in Ghana, including services linked to the Ghana Health Service. You may also enter optical product companies, research, academia or international eye-care organisations, with further training in areas such as low vision, paediatric optometry or ocular disease.

Who this programme may suit

You are likely to succeed if you enjoy biology, physics, technology and detailed clinical work. Careful observation, precision, patience and clear communication with patients are essential.
